The CROSSROADS Curriculum - A Closer Look
The CROSSROADS curriculum, like the full CROSSROADS program, is designed around 7 prevention strategies or mediators proven effective in preventing and delaying substance abuse in adolescents:
- Positive social norms,
- Beliefs about consequences,
- Making good decisions,
- Resisting pressure,
- Goal-setting skills,
- Healthy commitments and
- Accurate knowledge about drugs.
There are 5 lessons, 45 minutes each, plus a short introductory activity and a short closing activity. Each lesson includes 2 or more activities, making it easy to integrate CROSSROADS into your instructional plan.
Each CROSSROADS lesson is team-taught by the teacher and 2 or more peer educators. Lessons blend the power of peer education with traditional instruction, skill-building and interactive exercises to engage students and change their attitudes, knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors about alcohol, tobacco and other substances.

Each lesson begins with a short introduction, called Background Information for Teachers, that helps set the stage for the activities that follow.
-
Each activity is introduced by a navigation table like this one at the right, so you wíll know at a glance what you need for each activity and what the focus will be.
-
Throughout the CROSSROADS Curriculum are suggestions, tips and Optional Activities to further enhance the instructional experience.
Where CROSSROADS Fits in Your School or Organization
The class or course in which you choose to include the CROSSROADS curriculum is really up to you. While it has most often been integrated into health classes, the universal nature of its topics mean that it can be delivered effectively as part of many other courses including social sciences, science, psychology and others.
The CROSSROADS curriculum also fits well with many of the educational activities offered by clubs and organizations both in schools and in the community.
